Lane College is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools to award associate's and bachelor's degrees. Lane College was founded in 1882 by the Colored Methodist Episcopal Church (now Christian Methodist Episcopal Church) and named after Methodist Bishop Isaac Lane. Originally established as the C.M.E. High School to educate newly freed enslaved persons, it became Lane Institute in 1883 and Lane College in 1896 when the college department was formed. For nearly 150 years, the college has nurtured leaders across business, spirituality, literature, science, medicine, public service, and education. The college's motto, 'Esse, Non Videri' (To Be, Not to Seem), reflects its commitment to authentic education and character development.
