About
Lady Willingdon Institute of Advanced Study in Education is a government college for women only. It is located on Kamarajar Salai, Triplicane, Chennai, about 3 kms from Fort St. George. The campus premises measure 16 acres and overlook Marina Beach beside the Bay of Bengal.
History
In 1922 the institute was named 'Lady Willingdon Training School' after Lady Willingdon, wife of Lord Willingdon, then Governor of Madras Presidency. The pioneer Principal was Miss J.M. Gerrard. The college moved into its present building, designed by a Scottish architect, in 1940. 2006, and has been affiliated to Tamilnadu Teachers Education University since 2008.
Academics
Admission to B.Ed. is through single window counselling, while M.Ed., M.Phil. and Ph.D. admission is based on merit. Many Ph.D. scholars are awarded scholarships from the State Government, UGC and ICSSR. Many staff members are pursuing projects funded by UGC. The institute's vision is to be constructive, conscientious, and committed teaching personnel with due accountability.
Campus & Facilities
The campus includes a library, auditorium, seminar hall, gallery, classrooms, and a play ground. Science and mathematics laboratories include A.V., Mathematics, Physical Science and Biological Science labs. The institute also has a fully equipped and modern e-resource learning centre and a smart class facility.
Recognition
In 2000 the institute was the first Government institution to be accredited at the FIVE STARS level by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC). 2007.
