Knox College is a Christian theological school in the Reformed Protestant tradition and a federated college of the University of Toronto.
Knox College is a Christian theological school in the Reformed Protestant tradition that offers academic degree programs at the post-baccalaureate level. It is a seminary of The Presbyterian Church in Canada and a federated college of the University of Toronto. Knox is also a founding member of the Toronto School of Theology. The college describes itself as a leader in Reformed theological education, equipping graduates to live authentically and courageously in today's world.
Knox College was born in 1844 when a new fledging denomination created a theological college in colonial Upper Canada. It received its provincial charter in 1858 and federated with the University of Toronto in 1890. The new college building at 59 St. George Street, with its cornerstone laid in 1912, opened to the public on September 29, 1915. Knox helped found the Toronto School of Theology in 1969, and Ewart College amalgamated with Knox in 1991. In 1968, Shirley Jeffery graduated from Knox and became the first woman ordained as a minister in the PCC.
Knox offers the Master of Psychospiritual Studies (MPS), which integrates clinical training with spiritual care. The college is accredited by the Commission on Accrediting of The Association of Theological Schools (ATS) and is approved to offer the MDiv and MA in Theological Studies. As part of the University of Toronto and the Toronto School of Theology, students have access to world-class resources, libraries, facilities, and student services. Knox describes its student body as diverse, intergenerational, and interfaith.
The campus at 59 St. George Street includes the Caven Library, McKay Educational Resource Centre, a Chapel, and a Reading Room. Wi-Fi access, photocopying and scanning, and residence are also available. Knox College is considered one of the best examples of neo-gothic architecture in Toronto.
Knox lists separate admission routes for basic degree programs (CTS, MDiv, MPS, MTS) for domestic and international applicants. Graduate degree programs (MA, ThM, PhD, DMin) and the Doctor of Ministry (DMin) have their own admissions pages. TST transfers and new program applications are also handled through a separate route.
