History
The Vokkaligara Sangha decided on 2nd September 1979 to start a medical college from 1980-81. Shri R Gundu Rao, Chief Minister of Karnataka, laid the foundation stone on 30th November 1980. Classes began regularly on 16th March 1981, and that date is observed every year as KIMS Day. The Silver Jubilee Celebrations were held in 2006.
Academics
The institute is recognized by the Medical Council of India/National Medical Commission for running the MBBS course since 1980-81. It has run postgraduate degree and diploma courses since 1991-92. The annual intake is 150 for MBBS and 119 for PG degree and diploma courses in various specialties. The institute is also recognized by the General Medical Council, United Kingdom, and the World Health Organization.
Campus & Facilities
Pre-clinical and para-clinical departments are located at Banashankari 2nd Stage near BDA complex. Clinical departments and KIMS Hospital are located at Krishna Rajendra Road, Visveswarapuram, 4 km from the college campus. The hospital has a total bed strength of 1200. Facilities include boys' and girls' hostels, hostel guest room, internet, book reading room, transport buses, a health club with gym, indoor games, and a planned new sports complex, along with canteens.

The institution aims to provide an educational experience that prepares students for careers in medicine through excellence in teaching, patient care, and research, and to create physicians with a sense of social responsibility. It also aims to deliver high quality patient care at an affordable cost and provide health care services to all sections of society.
