History & Mission
Jamia Millia Islamia was established in 1920 at Aligarh in the United Provinces, moving to Karol Bagh, Delhi in 1925, and later to Jamia Nagar. It became a Central University by an Act of Parliament in 1988. The university was founded by Shaikhul Hind Maulana Mahmud Hasan, Maulana Muhammad Ali Jauhar, Hakim Ajmal Khan, Dr. Mukhtar Ahmad Ansari, Jenab Abdul Majeed Khwaja, and Dr. Zakir Husain. The institution strives to foster a secular and modern system of integrated education for sustainable development and a better future for all.
Academics
Jamia offers diverse academic and research programs through 10 faculties spanning Architecture and Ekistics, Dentistry, Education, Engineering and Technology, Fine Arts, Humanities and Languages, Law, Management Studies, Sciences, Social Sciences, and Life Sciences. The university operates 44 departments and 30 centres, with programs ranging from pre-school to doctoral degrees. It also provides distance and online education options for postgraduate, undergraduate, diploma, and certificate courses.
Campus & Infrastructure
The university maintains hostels and sports facilities for students. It operates five schools including Jamia Girls Senior Secondary School, Jamia Senior Secondary School (Morning Shift), Jamia Middle School, Syed Abid Husain Senior Secondary School, and Mushir Fatma Jamia Nursery School. The campus includes a university library, IT services, and various student support facilities including a helpdesk and mental health and wellness cell.
Research & Innovation
Jamia is a research-intensive institution with an h-index of 129. The university actively pursues research through faculty and students, with support for patents filed and granted. It offers research schemes including PMRF (Prime Minister's Research Fellowship), ARIIA (Atal Ranking of Institutions on Innovation Achievements), and Visvesvaraya Ph.D. Scheme.
