The Institute of Child Health is a trust-run hospital operating on a no-profit ideal. It was set up in Kolkata by Dr K.C. Chaudhuri, the doyen of Indian pediatrics. The institute's principal object is to work towards child healthcare and advance medical education for the public benefit. Its vision is a world where all children enjoy a healthy, disease-free and fruitful childhood.
History
The foundation stone was laid on 12 August 1954. The institute was inaugurated by Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, the then Prime Minister, on 16 January 1957. The in-patient department, with its fifty beds, opened on 15 June 1956. Over the years, the hospital was expanded from 50 to 200 beds to meet growing patient needs and MCI requirements for a postgraduate teaching hospital. A nursing college was added in September 2020 to educate and train nurses.
Academics & Services
The institute has 16 total seats for MD Pediatrics and promotes pediatrics as a prime branch of study and investigation in medical teaching and practice in India. It has Institutional Ethics Committees for clinical trials and for academic studies. The institute provides medical services free of cost to needy, downtrodden, abandoned and under-privileged children.
