The Washington State Institute for Public Policy is a legislative research organization created in 1983 to investigate public policy issues of interest to the Washington state legislature and state agencies. The institute conducts research on child welfare, criminal justice, education, health care, mental health, prevention, government, state economy, and cost-benefit analysis. Its reports are designed to provide evidence-based data for state policymakers and support public access to research findings.
The institute operates under a 16-member board of directors comprising state senators, representatives, and appointees from partner institutions including The Evergreen State College, Washington State University, and the University of Washington. The board is responsible for appointing institute directors, conducting reviews, and providing oversight for all institute projects.
