Indiana's premier urban research and health sciences institution, now split into two universities (2024).
IUPUI offered over 550 degree programs through 17 schools, including the Indiana University School of Medicine (nation's largest medical school main campus with 2,000+ students), School of Dentistry (Indiana's only dental school), Robert H. McKinney School of Law, and the nation's largest nursing school. The institution was classified as R2: Doctoral Universities – High research activity and conducted $629 million in research in 2024. Notable schools included the Lilly Family School of Philanthropy (established 2012) and Richard M. Fairbanks School of Public Health (opened 2013).
The 536-acre urban campus occupied downtown Indianapolis along the White River and Fall Creek, adjacent to the Canal and White River State Park cultural district. Student body of 30,000+ was 56% female, 44% male, with 89% from Indiana. IUPUI offered 400+ student organizations, Division I athletics in 16 sports, fraternities and sororities, and signature events including the IUPUI Regatta. Campus facilities included the Indiana University Natatorium (largest indoor pool in the U.S., capacity 4,700) and IU Michael A. Carroll Track & Soccer Stadium.
IUPUI was Indiana's second-largest research site with $271 million in research expenditures (FY 2014) and $629 million (2024), with 61% federally funded. The institution pioneered online education, launching the first Internet-based courses on an IU campus in 1998 through the CyberLab. Notable research entities on campus included Riley Hospital for Children, Eskenazi Health, Richard L. Roudebush VA Medical Center, Regenstrief Institute, and the Indiana Clinical and Translational Sciences Institute.
On August 12, 2022, IUPUI's boards announced a split effective July 1, 2024. Indiana University Indianapolis retained schools of science, business, law, nursing, and social work. Purdue University in Indianapolis assumed computer science, engineering, and technology programs. The IUPUI athletic program transferred to IU Indianapolis as IU Indy Jaguars, maintaining NCAA Division I and Horizon League memberships.
