IIT Mandi is one of the eighth newer second-generation IITs, established as a research university under The Institutes of Technology (Amendment) Act, 2011. The institute is strategically located in Kamand Valley on the left bank of the Uhl River at Kamand and Salgi villages, approximately 14 km from Mandi city in Himachal Pradesh. Since its inception, IIT Mandi has been actively involved in various Research and Development projects and has established Memoranda of Understanding with numerous international and national universities, companies, research centers, and organizations.
IIT Mandi offers a comprehensive range of academic programs across nine schools: Biosciences and Bioengineering, Computing and Electrical Engineering, Civil and Environmental Engineering, Chemical Sciences, Humanities and Social Sciences, Management, Mechanical and Materials Engineering, Mathematical and Statistical Sciences, and Physical Sciences. Undergraduate admissions are conducted through the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE), with B.Tech programs in Civil Engineering, Computer Science and Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Data Science and Engineering, Engineering Physics, Material Science and Engineering, General Engineering, and Microelectronics and VLSI. The institute also offers integrated B.Tech-M.Tech dual degree programs, including Bio-Engineering and Integrated MBA.
The institute operates multiple specialized research centers including the Center for Quantum Science and Technologies (CQST), Centre for Artificial Intelligence and Robotics (CAIR), Centre for Climate Change and Disaster Management (C3DAR), Indian Knowledge System and Mental Health Applications Centre (IKSMHA), and others. IIT Mandi Catalyst and IIT Mandi iHub support entrepreneurship and innovation initiatives. The institute maintains active postgraduate and doctoral programs across all schools, with recent achievements including faculty recognition as Fellows of the Royal Society of Chemistry and selections for prestigious national awards.
The campus is situated in the Kamand Valley at an elevation of approximately 1044 meters, enjoying a wet-sub temperate climate characteristic of the Himalayan foothills. Undergraduate admissions are conducted through the All-India Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) at various centers across the country. Postgraduate admissions include M.Tech programs through various pathways, and Ph.D. admissions are conducted by individual schools. The institute also offers specialized programs such as M.S. (Research) and dual degree programs. Recent announcements indicate ongoing recruitment for Ph.D. programs across multiple schools and M.Tech programs for the 2026 academic year.
