Academics
IIST offers comprehensive undergraduate B.Tech programs in Aerospace Engineering, Electronics and Communication Engineering (Avionics), and Computer Science and Engineering (Data Science). Five-year dual-degree programs combine B.Tech in Engineering Physics with M.S./M.Tech specializations in Astronomy and Astrophysics, Earth System Science, Solid State Physics, and Optical Engineering. Postgraduate programs include M.Tech and M.S. degrees in space-related specializations, and Ph.D. programs across seven disciplines. All curricula align with the National Education Policy 2020 and emphasize rigorous academic foundations with practical applications in space technology.
Research & Innovation
IIST integrates research seamlessly with academics, focusing on cutting-edge science and space applications. The institute operates 144 active research projects, has awarded 226 Ph.Ds, and maintains close collaboration with ISRO through the Department of Space. Research facilities include central labs, high-value equipment centers, and the Space Technology Innovation and Incubation Centre (STIIC). Faculty and students engage in curiosity-driven, impact-oriented research with international collaborations through MOUs with leading academic and research organizations.
Campus & Infrastructure
The main campus in Valiamala is self-sufficient with state-of-the-art laboratories, research centers, ground stations, and avionics facilities. Campus amenities include a library, Multidisciplinary Computing Centre, medical facility, bank, canteens, and student housing. IIST is expanding with two additional campuses: Ponmudi Campus in Kerala's scenic hills and Magudagiri Campus, both designed as cutting-edge research hubs for advanced space science and technology pursuits.
Admissions
Undergraduate and dual-degree admissions are merit-based, determined by JEE(Advanced) scores and minimum marks in Class XII. The institute follows Government of India reservation policies for SC (15%), ST (7.5%), and OBC-NCL (27%) categories. Online counseling is conducted for qualified candidates. Postgraduate and Ph.D. admissions follow separate merit-based processes. The 2026-27 academic year admissions are currently open with extended registration dates.
Placements & Outcomes
The Centre for Career Guidance and Placements facilitates full-time placements, internships (2-month summer, 6-month, and 1-year options), and industry-partnered research opportunities. Placement season runs August/September through May. ISRO absorption is a primary pathway, with 1,498+ alumni currently employed there. In 2025-26, 131 B.Tech students (66 in Electronics and Communication Engineering, 65 in Aerospace Engineering) are available for campus placement.
