The university was founded in 1965 by Henry and Suzanne Herzing. It grew from a single computer training institute into a multi-campus institution. The university is now led by their daughter, Renée Herzing, as president.
Program areas include Nursing, Healthcare, Behavioral Health, Business, Technology, Legal Studies, and Public Safety. The School of Nursing offers online and on-campus programs from entry-level practical nursing up to the Doctor of Nursing Practice, the university's first doctoral-level degree.
