Helene Fuld College of Nursing offers three distinct nursing programs designed as a career ladder. The accelerated LPN-to-RN/AAS track can be completed in 18 months, the generic baccalaureate program for students with no prior nursing degree takes 28 months, and the RN-to-BS completion program serves registered nurses seeking a bachelor's degree. The college follows a quarter system and holds a permanent charter from the New York State Board of Regents authorizing it to grant Associate in Applied Science and Bachelor of Science degrees in nursing.
The college is accredited by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education for the entire institution. The associate degree nursing program is accredited by the Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing, Inc. (ACEN), and the upper division baccalaureate program is accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE). In 2017, the college was ranked 1st in 'Best Community & Career Colleges by Salary Potential' by PayScale in their College Salary Report for 2-year schools.
The college occupies 34,000 square feet on the third and fourth floors of a building in East Harlem's Mount Morris Park Historic District, across from Marcus Garvey Park. Since 1992, it has been housed in a wing owned by Bethel Gospel Assembly Church (with which it is not affiliated). The urban commuter campus is easily accessible from all five boroughs via public transportation, Metro North, or car, though parking is limited. Classes are held during day and evening hours, Monday through Saturday, with clinical placements throughout NYC and Long Island.
Originally founded as the Hospital for Joint Diseases School of Practical Nursing in 1945, the institution evolved through several name changes and became Helene Fuld College of Nursing in 1996. It separated from North General Hospital in 2007 to become an independent not-for-profit college. The college's mission is to provide a dynamic career-ladder approach to nursing education to improve professional practice and contribute to the health of communities, serving as a civic anchor in Harlem.
