About
Gurudas College is an undergraduate college affiliated to the University of Calcutta. The college's name commemorates Sir Gurudas Banerjee, the first Indian Vice-Chancellor of the University of Calcutta. It is located in the Narkeldanga neighbourhood in the eastern periphery of Kolkata. Its address is 1/1 Suren Sarkar Road, Narkeldanga, Kolkata 700054.
History
The college was established in 1956. It was one of five colleges set up under a Government order issued in July 1956 under the Ministry of Relief and Rehabilitation. These colleges were created to meet the growing educational need caused by the influx of displaced people after the partition.
Academics
The college offers undergraduate courses in 20 subjects, and 18 of these departments offer Honours programmes. Three departments, Bengali, Zoology and Physics, offer Postgraduate programmes. The teacher-student ratio is approximately 1:28. Admission is based entirely on merit, following publication of Higher Secondary Examination results. Admission routes include online undergraduate admission, Four-Year and Three-Year Multidisciplinary Programmes under University of Calcutta guidelines, and postgraduate admission in Bengali, Physics and Zoology.
Campus & Facilities
The campus has three buildings, with another under construction. The library is housed in a separate building set amidst greenery and has nearly 50,000 books and journals in an open-access system. Facilities listed include a boys' common room, girls' common room, canteen, gymnasium, health unit, playground, science laboratories, photocopier, drinking water, cycle and motor-bike stand, and internet and Wi-Fi in the library.
Recognition
In 2011 the college applied for assessment and accreditation by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) and was accredited with a B grade. The college's mission includes providing quality education at an affordable cost, and its vision includes holistic education that contributes to national development.
