The institution traces its origins to a Medical School established in Lahore in 1864. It relocated to Amritsar in 1920 and was upgraded to Medical College status in 1943. The foundation stone was laid on February 1, 1944, by Lt. Col. Nawab Khijar Tiwana. After independence, Dr. A.N. Goyal served as the first principal (1947–51). The college played a crucial role in providing medical aid to partition refugees. Alumni have established and led eminent healthcare institutions across India and globally.
