The Government Medical College, Thiruvananthapuram, is a public medical college in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala, India. Its address is Govt. Medical College, Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala - 695011. The college is Kerala's first medical college.
The college was founded in 1951 and inaugurated by Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru. C. O. Karunakaran was the college's first dean. The first group of students was admitted in August 1951. The campus covers 139 acres, with hillocks surrounded by evergreen coconut groves and paddy fields, facing the sea, about 4 kilometres from northwestern Thiruvananthapuram city. Although the college was initially affiliated with the University of Kerala, it has been affiliated with the Kerala University of Health Sciences since 2010.
In addition to an MBBS programme, postgraduate degree and diploma courses are offered in 22 specialties. The Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation department offers a 3-year post graduation course in PMR (MD PMR) for qualified MBBS graduates. The Department of Community Medicine, established in 1953, was the first of its kind in India. Kerala's first pharmaceutical college, the College of Pharmaceutical Sciences, was established in 1967 and offers bachelor's and master's degrees and a diploma in pharmaceutical sciences.
The Medical College Hospital is a 1,950-bed hospital and the largest multi-specialty hospital in South Kerala, serving most of the Thiruvananthapuram and Kollam districts and adjacent districts in Tamil Nadu. It admits 80,000 patients a year and provides over 7,500,000 outpatient consultations. Facilities listed include a library, Silver Jubilee Auditorium, Dr. C.O. Karunakaran Auditorium, men's, women's and nurses hostels, playgrounds and sports courts, Sree Avittom Thirunal Hospital for Women and Children, and the Specialty, Super Speciality (SSB) and Multi-speciality (MSB) blocks. The Regional Institute of Ophthalmology is about 4 kilometres from the main campus.
The college had the first cadaver organ transplant in a Kerala government hospital in 2012. The Multidisciplinary Research Laboratory has a zebra fish research facility, the first installation of its kind in Kerala.
