History
The present Mayo Hospital came into existence in 1862 and was known as City Hospital. A medical school was started in 1914 in that hospital building and was under the Nagpur Education Board. Construction of the college started on 2nd January 1948 on land offered by Lt. Col. K. V. Kukdey, then chairman of the Nagpur Improvement Trust. The first batch was admitted in July 1947. The college received MCI recognition in 1952, and its building was inaugurated by the first President of India, Dr. Rajendra Prasad, on 27th March 1953.
Academics
The intake capacity for Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery in 2024-2025 was 250. Postgraduate courses are available in almost all disciplines. Admission routes include the institutional round merit list for the Occupational Therapy School and Centre, B.Sc. Nursing, MBBS (UG), B.Sc. PMT, and PG DMLT. The college was the first centre in India where an Occupational Therapy and Physiotherapy school was started.
Campus & Facilities
The whole college is spread over 196 acres of land. The college building is three floors (ground plus two) and is constructed over 84,000 square feet. The central library has over 400 seats and 54,726 total books, with 16 computers with internet access. Facilities listed include a casualty department, hospital ambulance service, blood bank, drugs and alcohol de-addiction centre, physiotherapy unit, operation theatre complex, intensive care units, a paying ward, and a super speciality hospital. The college had the first Cobalt Unit in Maharashtra and the first C.T. Scanner in the state.
