GITAM is a private nonprofit deemed-to-be university. Founded in 1980, it was inspired by the ideals of Mahatma Gandhi. Dr. M. V. V. S. Murthi is listed as its founder, and Mathukumilli Sribharat is listed as President.

Campus & Facilities
GITAM has four campuses: Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Visakhapatnam and GIMSR. The Visakhapatnam campus, established in 1980 in Gandhi Nagar, Rushikonda, is described as a beachside campus with 100+ acres and 6,500+ hostel beds. Visakhapatnam is a port city on the East coast and one of Andhra Pradesh's four smart cities. GIMSR, Andhra Pradesh's first Deemed-to-be Medical College, is home to 600+ medical students. Listed facilities include a gymnasium, cricket ground, basketball and throwball courts, labs, classrooms, a research centre, health and wellbeing support (UDAAN), housing, and transport.
