History

Friendship College was established on October 12, 1891, by Masel Phillip Hall as a private Baptist institution serving African-American students. Originally known as Friendship Normal and Industrial College, it later operated as Friendship Junior College. The college closed permanently on December 16, 1981, and was subsequently demolished following a fire.

Athletics

Friendship College fielded teams in baseball, football, and basketball, competing within the South Atlantic Athletic Conference under the Tigers mascot. The school is notable for producing Harthorne Wingo, a basketball player who went on to play in the NBA and win an NBA championship. The football program experienced significant defeats, including a 106–0 loss to Florida Normal in 1947 and a 142–0 loss to Edward Waters in 1964.
