A historic private college in Portsmouth, Virginia that operated from 1958 to 1968.
Frederick College was established in 1958 through a grant from the Fred W. Beazley Foundation. It originally opened as a two-year institution on the grounds of a former munitions depot in Portsmouth, Virginia, before expanding to a four-year college in 1961. The institution operated for a decade until its closure in 1968, after which its campus was transferred to the Virginia Community College System to establish Tidewater Community College.
Frederick College competed at the NCAA small college level (now Division II) under the nickname the Lions. The basketball team won the Small College National Championship in the late 1960s, led by player Tom Jasper. The college also maintained a 3600-seat football stadium and an undefeated track team during the 1963–64 season, coached by John Meroney. Men's basketball was coached by Bob Hodges.
