FSCC offers more than 35 fields of study, enabling students to earn credits for transfer to four-year institutions or pursue associate degrees and certificates. The college maintains a 14:1 student-to-faculty ratio, emphasizing quality education in smaller classes with personal attention. More than 50 courses are guaranteed by the Kansas Board of Regents to transfer to any public college or university in Kansas, covering science, mathematics, history, English, business, computer science, and psychology. Certificate programs range from agriculture and nursing to cosmetology and motorcycle technology.
Located in southeast Kansas's rolling hills, FSCC operates a main campus in Fort Scott on Horton Street with satellite locations in Pittsburg, Frontenac, Paola, and Hillsdale. Students can engage in 20+ organizations and activities including Phi Theta Kappa honor society, president's ambassadors, livestock and meats judging, choir, orchestra, and theatre. The college hosts cultural and sporting events such as Aggie Day, Community Children's Fair, Elementary Music Festival, and concerts. The Gordon Parks Museum, honoring Fort Scott native Gordon Parks, attracts visitors globally.
FSCC welcomes traditional and non-traditional students through straightforward enrollment: apply online, submit transcripts or ACT/Accuplacer scores, complete FAFSA, and meet with an advisor. High school students can participate in concurrent enrollment (college courses during school day) or dual credit (online or on-campus courses). The college offers 350+ scholarship opportunities, including Presidential Ambassadors (covering books, tuition, fees up to 18 credit hours for 3.5+ GPA Kansas residents) and Greyhound Advantage (tuition up to 12 credit hours for 3.0+ GPA residents).
FSCC competes in the Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference (KJCCC) and National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA). Current sports include volleyball, men's and women's basketball, baseball, softball, and men's and women's rodeo teams competing in the Central Plains Region of the National Intercollegiate Rodeo Association. The school's mascot is Gizmo the Greyhound, with school colors maroon and gray. Football was discontinued in 2021–2022 due to resource constraints and conference eligibility changes.
