History
Forbesganj College was established in 1959 and was then under the purview of Bhagalpur University. The college became a constituent of L. N. Mithila University on 1st April 1977. It has been a constituent unit of the newly established Purnea University, Purnia since March 2018.

The college is located on the India-Nepal border, and Nepal's industrial town Birat Nagar is 15 kilometres away. Its address is Purnea - Araria - Forbesganj Road, Forbesganj, Bihar-854318.
Academics
The college attracts a large number of graduation students in the faculties of Arts, Science and Commerce. Since 2013, a self-financed B.Ed course has been introduced to the existing curriculum. Its mission includes ensuring quality education for economically weaker sections of society and imparting human values and leadership qualities among students. It also aims to strengthen bilateral relations with Nepal through a student exchange programme and to conduct applied research that can address society's needs.

The college has 10 acres and 74 decimals of land. Five laboratories cover Physics, Chemistry, Zoology, Botany and Psychology, where practical classes are conducted. The campus includes a Central Library with a reading room, a Welfare Hostel managed by the Government of Bihar, and a newly built girls' hostel. Listed facilities also include a seminar hall, sports facilities and playground, an indoor synthetic sports stadium, a gymnasium, an auditorium, a Computer Education Centre and E-Learning classes.
