The Florida Institute of Oceanography is the state of Florida's designated oceanographic organization, established in 1967 to advance marine science education and research. As an Academic Infrastructure Support Organization of the University of South Florida since 2009, FIO connects Florida's academic, public, and private partners through oceanographic research, education, workforce development, and maritime operations. The institute unites more than 800 marine scientists across the state through its 34-member consortium, including universities, state agencies, and research associations.
FIO operates three large research vessels—R/V Weatherbird II (115 feet), R/V W.T. Hogarth (78 feet), and R/V Western Flyer (117 feet)—plus the Keys Marine Laboratory on Long Key, which has been managed by FIO since 1990. The institute supports marine research across multiple disciplines and gained national prominence for its leading role in assessing the Deepwater Horizon oil spill impact, receiving $10 million in BP research funding. FIO also administers the Florida RESTORE Act Centers of Excellence Program (FLRACEP), which provides competitive grants for fish and wildlife research along Florida's Gulf coast.
FIO provides experiential learning opportunities for undergraduate and graduate students in ocean science and related disciplines through vessel-based courses, laboratory programs, and multi-institution collaborations. Over 10,000 undergraduates and 2,000 graduate students have participated in FIO-supported education, with more than 3,000 graduates pursuing careers in STEM fields. The institute offers access to specialized marine equipment, field operations expertise, and educational outreach programs including FIO Oceans Day and community engagement initiatives.
FIO is funded through state legislative appropriations, vessel and facility use fees, and contract/grant administration charges. The institute's financial model supports its role as a regional marine science and technology resource serving Florida's research community and the broader ocean science enterprise. FIO strengthens USF's leadership in ocean science, coastal resilience, and marine innovation while addressing complex coastal and ocean challenges.
