FIT offers 27 undergraduate majors across three schools: Art and Design (17 majors), Jay and Patty Baker School of Business and Technology (10 majors), and School of Liberal Arts. Degrees include Associate of Applied Science, Bachelor of Fine Arts, and Bachelor of Science. The School of Graduate Studies offers seven programs leading to Master of Arts, Master of Fine Arts, or Master of Professional Studies. FIT is accredited by the Middle States Association, National Association of Schools of Art and Design, and Council for Interior Design Accreditation.
The nine-building campus occupies 1.5 blocks in Midtown South Manhattan. Facilities include the Fred P. Pomerantz Art and Design Center with photography studios, sculpture studios, and design workshops; the Shirley Goodman Resource Center housing the Museum at FIT and library services; and the Gladys Marcus Library. Four dormitories house approximately 2,300 students. The campus features two theaters (Haft Auditorium and Katie Murphy Amphitheatre), a conference center, retail food court, deli, and Starbucks.
Established in 1969 as the Design Laboratory and renamed in 1993, the Museum at FIT holds over 50,000 garments and accessories from the 18th century to present, including works by Adrian, Balenciaga, Chanel, and Dior. The museum features three galleries: a lower-level special exhibitions gallery, a Fashion and Textile History Gallery with rotating selections, and Gallery FIT for student and faculty work. It received American Alliance of Museums accreditation in 2012 and attracts over 100,000 visitors annually with free admission.
FIT serves over 7,500 full-time and 2,100 part-time students. The college offers undergraduate and graduate admissions pathways, including a 2+2 pathway program. Portfolio requirements vary by program. As a SUNY community college, New York State county governments contribute to tuition costs for residents of those counties. The college mascot is Stitch and the athletic nickname is Tigers.
