The Evangelical Seminary of Puerto Rico offers graduate studies in religion and theology. The institution is accredited by the Association of Theological Schools in the United States and Canada, the Middle States Commission on Higher Education, and the Council on Higher Education of Puerto Rico, ensuring quality theological education at the graduate level.
As of 2018, the seminary is sponsored by seven major Protestant denominations: the American Baptist Churches USA, the Iglesia Evangélica Unida de Puerto Rico (IEUPR), the United Church of Christ, the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, the United Methodist Church, the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.), and the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ). This multi-denominational support reflects its role as an interdenominational theological institution.
The seminary was founded on September 11, 1919, by a group of theological schools and biblical institutes of Protestant denominations that arrived in Puerto Rico following the Spanish-American War. It has served as a center for Protestant theological education in Puerto Rico for over a century.
