École supérieure de ballet du Québec is a Montréal dance school offering higher training in ballet and contemporary dance interpretation.
The origins of the École supérieure de ballet du Québec date back to the early 1950s. In 1966, at the request of the Quebec Ministry of Cultural Affairs, Ludmilla Chiriaeff incorporated the École supérieure, which later obtained an independent charter from the company. In 1980, the school and the Grands Ballets Canadiens moved into the Maison de la danse du Québec on the Plateau Mont-Royal.
The school's mission is to train interpreters and creators according to the highest standards of artistic excellence, while contributing to the recognition, influence and development of dance. It places particular importance on ballet as the founding element of an ever-evolving tradition. The school is managed by a dual leadership, with Anik Bissonnette as artistic director and Alix Laurent as general director.
The school offers a higher training program in dance interpretation with Ballet classique and Ballet contemporain tracks. Its teaching program also includes the training of masters and accompanying pianists, alongside recreational courses for children and adults. Admission is by audition before a jury for both tracks. The school's affiliation with the Grands Ballets offers opportunities such as participating in Casse-Noisette.
The school is located at 4816, rue Rivard, Montréal (Québec) H2J 2N6, Canada, within the Maison de la danse du Québec Ludmilla-Chiriaeff. The campus has nine dance studios. The Bibliothèque de la danse Vincent-Warren, established by the École supérieure, is described as the most important dance documentation centre in Canada. Since 2017, the Grands Ballets Canadiens have been based in the Quartier des spectacles, giving the school more space to develop its programs.
