The École du Barreau describes itself as the first postgraduate teaching institution in North America that guarantees the preparation and professional integration of young lawyers. Its mission is to ensure the professional training of future lawyers, preparing them for the first years of practice and for obtaining the license to practise. Its vision is to be a pioneer among teaching institutions in terms of professionalization. The school lists innovation, audacity, determination, competence, commitment and adaptability as its values.
The École du Barreau was founded in 1968 to professionalize the practice of law. Its address is 76, rue Saint-Paul, bureau 200, Québec (Québec) G1K 3V9.
The programme is structured in 3 blocks. The first block, specific learning, consists of three training sectors, each concluded by an exam. The curriculum includes a mandatory clinical experiential phase, and the internship in the workplace lasts six months under the supervision of a member of the Ordre or of the magistrature. Candidates must hold a diploma giving access to the Barreau du Québec licence, or a recognized equivalent, to be eligible. The Comité de la formation professionnelle is responsible for administering the programme.
The École du Barreau and its training centres include four training centres, with one located in Québec. Student services are available. The Clinique juridique du Barreau is supervised by Me Jany St-Cyr, who manages its administration, organization and operation.
Admission is handled through the Comité d'accès à la profession, which is established by article 45 of the Loi sur le Barreau and reviews candidate files. Routes include general admission, admission for candidates trained abroad through an equivalence route, and a French language proficiency examination administered by the Office de la langue française. A diagnostic assessment is conducted during enrolment.
