A pioneering Maine teacher-training college that operated for 75 years before merging with Maine Maritime Academy.
Eastern State Normal School was established in 1867 as a public institution dedicated to teacher training and education. It served Maine's educational needs for 75 years, graduating educators who populated the state's public school system. In its final year of operation (1942), the school shared its Castine campus with the newly established Maine Maritime Academy, which subsequently acquired the facility after Eastern State Normal School closed.
The school produced several notable graduates, including Frances Lewis Brackett Damon (class of 1880), an accomplished American poet and writer, and Effie Hinckley Ober, who founded and managed the Boston Ideal Opera Company. George A. Phillips, a medical doctor and Maine state legislator, also attended the institution.
