History
The Tmt. Kannammal Educational Trust was established in 1985, and the same year it founded Thai Moogambigai Polytechnic College. Dr. M.G.R. Engineering College was established in 1988, followed by Thai Moogambikai Dental College in 1991. In 2003, both institutions were conferred Deemed-to-be University status under the name Dr. M.G.R. Educational and Research Institute.
Academics
The university describes itself as a multidisciplinary hub for engineering, medical, dental, paramedical, allied sciences education, architecture, law, management studies and humanities. Its mission is to serve as a resource centre for higher-level teaching and learning in these fields. Thai Moogambikai Dental College and Hospital is a constituent college established with statutory approval from the NMC.

Admissions
Admission routes vary by programme. MBBS admissions are through NEET UG and MCC counselling, and postgraduate medicine (MD/MS) through NEET PG and MCC/DME counselling. BDS admissions use Tamil Nadu State Counselling, MDS uses Tamil Nadu PG Dental Counselling, and B.Tech Full Time admission is based on merit in HSC PCM/Biology.
Recognition
