Dominican University New York was founded in 1952 as Dominican College of Blauvelt by the Dominican Sisters of Blauvelt to offer teacher preparation for religious women. The college opened to lay students five years later and became fully coeducational in 1967. In May 2022, the New York State Board of Regents approved the name change from Dominican College to Dominican University New York.
