The Conservatoire de musique de Rimouski is a public music institution in Rimouski, Quebec, offering training from primary school to university level.
The Conservatoire de musique de Rimouski is part of the Conservatoire de musique et d'art dramatique du Québec, a state corporation subsidized by the Government of Quebec and reporting to the Ministère de la Culture et des Communications. The Conservatoire de musique et d'art dramatique du Québec was founded in 1942 by orchestra conductor Wilfrid Pelletier. Its mission is to administer and operate music and drama teaching institutions in various regions of Quebec for the professional training of performers and creators.
The Rimouski campus offers a continuum of music training from primary school to the second cycle of university, which the Conservatoire describes as the only state institution in North America offering this continuum to music students. It offers a Baccalauréat en enseignement de la musique developed with the Université du Québec à Rimouski (UQAR), described as unique in Quebec. Training focuses on personalized instruction in which each student's pace is respected. Ensembles include an Orchestre baroque and an Ensemble contemporain, and a Préconservatoire track serves young musicians with good potential.
The Conservatoire is located in the city centre of Rimouski at 22, rue Sainte-Marie, near concert halls, the Orchestre symphonique de l'Estuaire and the Opéra. Facilities listed include a concert hall (Salle Bertin Bélanger), a multipurpose room, teaching rooms, rehearsal studios, and pianos, organs, harpsichords and instruments, including a Steinway concert piano. The Conservatoire sits in the historic centre of Rimouski, a city with an educational and maritime vocation, beside the Saint Lawrence River.
Admission to music programs is based on an audition. The Conservatoire has 25 professors. The Fondation du Conservatoire has provided financial support to music and drama students since 1983.
