A public Montreal drama conservatory, part of the Conservatoire de musique et d'art dramatique du Québec, training professional performers.
The Conservatoire d'art dramatique de Montréal is part of the Conservatoire de musique et d'art dramatique du Québec, a state corporation funded by the Government of Quebec and under the Ministry of Culture and Communications. The Conservatoire was founded in 1942 by conductor Wilfrid Pelletier. Its mission is to administer and operate institutions across various regions of Quebec for the professional training of performers and creators in music and drama. The Fondation du Conservatoire has provided financial support to students since 1983.
The acting program is described as highly recognized and has been the starting point of several major careers in theatre and film. The acting training spans three intensive years, and it is equivalent to a first university cycle. Training prepares students for professional careers as performers in theatre, cinema, media and related fields. Second-year students take part in a three-week tour in southern France before their final year. The application deadline is March 1.
The drama conservatory is located in the Plateau-Mont-Royal area of Montreal at 4750, avenue Henri-Julien, and shares one building with the music conservatory. Facilities include the Théâtre Rouge, a concert hall, a recital hall, drama and music rehearsal studios, a dance studio, a multimedia studio, a TV studio, a digital recording studio and dubbing facilities. The library holds 35,000 books and 50,000 scores, and seven of the rooms can be rented.
