CIM offers intensive training across 25+ areas of study including orchestral instruments, voice, composition, conducting, and music theory. Students benefit from a partnership with Case Western Reserve University, enabling dual-degree programs and access to non-music coursework. The curriculum emphasizes both technical mastery and 21st-century professional skills, with opportunities for chamber music, ensemble performance, and study abroad. Double majoring is available in theory, composition, eurhythmics, and audio recording.
The conservatory occupies a prominent location in University Circle, a cultural hub on Cleveland's east side. The main building, opened in 1961 and expanded in 2007 with 34,000 square feet of new space, houses teaching studios, practice rooms, recital halls, the Robinson Music Library, and classrooms. CIM students have full access to Case Western Reserve University amenities through a cooperative arrangement.
CIM receives approximately 1,000–1,200 applications annually for roughly 100 conservatory openings. The student body comprises up to 350 conservatory students (60% undergraduate, 40% graduate), with 23% international enrollment and 17% identifying as Black or Latinx. Admission is highly selective and based on audition performance and artistic potential.
CIM is the largest presenter of free performances and masterclasses in the Midwest, hosting approximately 600 annual events, most free and streamed globally. Alumni have achieved prominence as soloists, opera leads, chamber musicians, Grammy Award-winning recording artists, and thought leaders. The Institute offers an Orchestral Career Fellowship for graduates pursuing positions in major orchestras.
