Distance-learning technical college specializing in electronics and computer technology (closed 2022).
CIE offered diplomas, certificates, and associate degrees in electronics technology, broadcast engineering technology, computer technology, and related fields. Programs included CompTIA A+ and Network+ certifications, programming in Java and C#, industrial electronics with PLC technology, and photovoltaic systems installation. The school was certified by the Ohio State Board of Career Colleges and Schools and affiliated with the Society of Broadcast Engineers.
Established in 1934 as Smith Practical Radio Institute, CIE pioneered correspondence-based technical education and attracted an international student body from its inception. By 1972, enrollment reached 40,000 students from 70 countries. In 1956, the institute patented its innovative 'Auto-Programmed' curriculum method. A subsidiary, World College, was added in 1992 but closed in 2014. CIE itself permanently closed on September 30, 2022.
The institute ceased operations on September 30, 2022, ending nearly 88 years of distance learning education in electronics and technology fields.
