Montana State University Billings offers over 115 specialized programs through five colleges, awarding certificates, associate, bachelor's, and master's degrees. The university emphasizes affordable public education with a 14:1 student-to-faculty ratio. Graduate programs include Master of Education, Master of Science in Athletic Training, Master of Health Administration, Master of Criminal Justice, and Master of Science in Psychology. MSUB competes in NCAA Division II primarily through the Great Northwest Athletic Conference (GNAC) since 2007–08. The Yellowjackets field 16 varsity sports: men's baseball, basketball, cross country, golf, soccer, and track & field; women's basketball, cross country, golf, soccer, softball, track & field, triathlon, and volleyball; and co-ed cheerleading and stunt. Notable achievements include the baseball team's four GNAC regular-season titles (2015, 2016, 2018, 2019) and the women's basketball team's Elite Eight appearance in 2017–18.
MSUB is test-optional for admission; applicants need a high school diploma or GED and a 2.0 GPA. The university accepts first-time freshmen, transfer students, graduate students, international students, and dual-enrollment high school students. According to the 2017 Department of Labor and Industry Report, MSUB's four-year graduates earn on average $4,500 more per year than four-year graduates from other Montana public institutions, and two-year graduates earn $5,800 more per year than two-year graduates from other Montana institutions.
