The Canadian Reformed Theological Seminary (CRTS) is a Christian institute of theology established by and accountable to the federation of Canadian Reformed Churches. Its address is 110 West 27th Street, Hamilton, Ontario, L9C 5A1. The primary purpose of CRTS is to train students to serve as faithful, effective ministers of the Gospel. A secondary purpose is to produce scholarly and popular resources that serve God's people throughout the world.
The Theological College of the Canadian Reformed Churches was officially opened in Hamilton, Ontario on September 10, 1969, with Dr. J. Faber as its first principal. In 1981 the Legislative Assembly of the Province of Ontario adopted the Canadian Reformed Theological College Act, which empowered the Senate to grant the Master of Divinity degree. In 2010 the operating name was changed to Canadian Reformed Theological Seminary, while the former name was retained as the legal name. Over its history, the seminary faculty grew from three to five full-time professors.
The Master of Divinity program includes a Pastoral Training Program, in which students complete ministry internships across their four years of study. The seminary submits to the doctrine of the infallible Word of God as summarized in the ecumenical creeds and the Belgic Confession, the Heidelberg Catechism, and the Canons of Dort. Over 170 graduates have received the MDiv degree in over fifty years of history, most of whom have become pastors.
In 2011 CRTS became a member of the Association of Theological Schools (ATS) in the United States, and its Master of Divinity program became fully accredited through ATS in 2013. The Master of Divinity degree is approved by ATS.
