About
Bolpur College was established in 1950 as an institution of higher learning by the generosity of a few large-hearted education-loving men of the locality. It is a private, grant-in-aid institution located in Bolpur, Birbhum, West Bengal, with PIN 731204. The college became a Government Sponsored college in 1950 under a scheme introduced by the Government of West Bengal. The college is a General Degree College under the University of Burdwan.
History
The college was first affiliated to Calcutta University and came under the University of Burdwan after that university was established in 1962. B.A. Degree classes were affiliated in 1956, the B.Sc. Course was introduced in 1959, and the B.Com. Course was introduced in 1963-64. The college has been co-educational from its very inception.
Academics
The college has eight Arts Departments, five Science Departments and a Commerce Department, teaching Honours and General Courses. The General Degree course in Physical Education was added in 2014, and courses in Music and Education were added in 2015. The college's motto is sa vidya ya vimuktaye, meaning knowledge is what leads to freedom.
Campus & Facilities
The college is housed in its own buildings on a reasonably spacious campus and has a separate spacious three-storied library building. It also has its own hostel for minority (male) resident students only.
