Bluefield University offers undergraduate and graduate study in campus-based and online formats through six colleges: Caudill School of Business, College of Arts and Letters, College of Science & Health Sciences, School of Criminal Justice, School of Education & Social Sciences, and School of Nursing. The university provides over 40 academic programs grounded in the liberal arts tradition with emphasis on science and technology. The 82-acre campus sits on the eastern edge of Bluefield, Virginia, in the Appalachian Mountains, approximately 150 feet from the Virginia-West Virginia state line. Key facilities include Easley Library, Harman Chapel (housing music and theater departments), Science Center, Cox Visual Arts Center, and the Dan MacMillan Center for outreach and service. Residential options include Cruise Hall, Rish Hall, East River Hall, Alumni Hall, and Bluestone Commons (apartment-style housing). The campus features dining facilities, bookstore, and access to outdoor activities including an on-campus nature trail. Athletes comprise approximately 60% of the student population.
Bluefield athletic teams, known as the Rams, compete in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA). Most sports compete in the Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) since 2014–15, while the football team competes in the Mid-South Conference (MSC) since 2014. The university previously held membership in the National Christian College Athletic Association (NCCAA) until 2019–20. The university hosted the NCCAA Softball National Championship.
Founded in 1922 by the Baptist General Association of Virginia after local residents donated land and start-up funds, Bluefield began as a two-year junior college. Notable alumnus John F. Nash (Nobel Prize winner) took supplementary mathematics courses at the college while in high school. The institution became a four-year college in 1975 and achieved university status in 2021 during its centennial celebration. Dr. Steven Peterson was appointed as the 10th president in July 2024.
