Baylor College of Medicine comprises four schools: the School of Medicine, Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences, School of Health Professions, and National School of Tropical Medicine. The MD program matriculates approximately 185 students annually (75% Texas residents) with an accelerated 1.5-year preclinical curriculum followed by 2.5 years of clinical training. The college offers dual-degree programs including MD/PhD, MD/MPH, MD/MBA, and MD/JD. The Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences offers PhD degrees in seven interdisciplinary specializations. The School of Health Professions includes highly-ranked programs in physician assistant training, nurse anesthesia, orthotics and prosthetics, genetic counseling, and clinical psychology.
BCM ranked 20th nationally in NIH research funding as of 2024. The institution maintains a $1.48 billion endowment and operates the BCM Innovation Institute to foster commercialization and technology transfer. Faculty conduct biomedical research across multiple disciplines, with notable recent achievements including development of the first mRNA vaccine for elephant endotheliotropic herpesvirus. The college sponsors over 80 ACGME-accredited residency and fellowship training programs.
BCM is affiliated with major teaching hospitals in the Texas Medical Center and beyond, including Baylor St. Luke's Medical Center (50/50 ownership with Catholic Health Initiatives), Texas Children's Hospital, Ben Taub Hospital, MD Anderson Cancer Center, TIRR Memorial Hermann, and the Michael E. DeBakey VA Medical Center. The college also announced a 2020 affiliation with Baylor Scott & White Health to develop a regional medical school campus in Temple, Texas, enrolling 40 students annually starting fall 2023.
As of April 2020, Baylor College of Medicine is the third least expensive private medical school in the country in terms of tuition. The Medical Scientist Training Program (MD/PhD) is one of only 51 such programs nationally and provides free tuition plus a $29,000 annual stipend to 8-12 matriculating students per year.
