About
Barasat Government College is located at 10, K.N.C Road, Barasat, Kolkata-700124, in North 24 Parganas, West Bengal. It is a government institution. The college was set up in 1950 and has since catered to a wide cross-section of urban, suburban and rural students.
History
The college owes its commencement to the post-partition need to rehabilitate the displaced immigrant population settled in the area, through formal education and subsequent employment. It was initially affiliated to the University of Calcutta. Since 2008, it has functioned under West Bengal State University.
Mission
The college aims to inculcate an urge for knowledge and enlightenment in the younger generation so they can take part in the nation's development. It seeks to increase women's participation in higher education, as part of the legacy of the town. It also aims to provide access to higher education to students, particularly from weaker sections, irrespective of religion, race, caste or creed, through formal and non-formal (distance learning) modes.
Academics and Research
The college has 13 departments, of which 4 also offer PG courses. Over the last five years, 10 research project grants worth more than 38 lakhs INR were received from government agencies such as DST, UGC, SERB and ICMR by 5 teachers. The PG Departments of Botany and Zoology were awarded DBT BOOST II in 2017 for three years for upgrading research laboratories. Faculty published 257 research papers in academic journals over the last five years.
Campus & Facilities
The college has 61 classrooms, 19 of which are ICT enabled, and 26 well-equipped laboratories. Its automated library holds over 85,000 books and about 680 journals. The college has 122 computers with Wi-Fi internet access. Facilities also include a seminar hall, a gymnasium, common rooms for male and female students, and a sick room.
Admissions
Postgraduate (M.A./M.Sc.) two-year NEP admission is offered through a merit list for West Bengal State University students, and through seat allocation between the home university and other universities. Undergraduate (B.A./B.Sc.) admission is through Centralised Admission-2026.
