A Baptist theological seminary in Richmond, Virginia, founded in 1989 and closed in 2019.
Baptist Theological Seminary at Richmond (BTSR) was founded in March 1989 by Virginia Baptists in response to changes within the Southern Baptist Convention during the conservative resurgence. The seminary was affiliated with the Southern Baptist Alliance (now the Alliance of Baptists), the Baptist General Association of Virginia, and the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship, providing an alternative theological education option for Baptists seeking a different approach.
BTSR was accredited by the Association of Theological Schools in the United States and Canada and offered graduate theological degrees including the Master of Divinity (M.Div.), Master of Theological Studies (MTS), and Doctor of Ministry (D.Min.). The seminary focused on theological education aligned with its Baptist heritage and cooperative fellowship values.
On November 13, 2018, the BTSR Trustees announced the seminary would close effective June 30, 2019. Financial pressure was cited as the primary reason for closure. The institution worked with students to facilitate credit transfers to other seminaries.
