Bangalore Institute of Legal Studies, popularly known as BILS, is a private affiliated law college located in the heart of old-time Bangalore City in Basavanagudi. The college is situated at Vijaya College Campus, R.V. Road, Basavanagudi, Bangalore – 560 004. The Dean describes BILS as an institution that combines intellectual engagement with a commitment to serving the common good.
History
The college was established in 1993, the year in which BHS HES was celebrating its Golden Jubilee. It was established at Jayanagar and later shifted to the R.V. Road Campus. The BHS Higher Education Society, established in 1942 by a group of eminent educationists and philanthropists, is associated with the college. The college was inaugurated by Shri. B.V. Acharya, the then Advocate General, Government of Karnataka. Shri. G.Y. Subba Rao assumed office as the first Principal, Prof. S.S. Alur was appointed Principal on 10 July 1996, and Smt. Preeti S. Desai took over as Principal from Dr. Sapna S in May 2017.
Academics
The college offers a 5-year B.A., LL.B. course with merit-based admission. Students have been visiting villages every year in and around Bangalore to provide legal aid to the needy through the Legal Services Clinic. The college is described as one of the well known affiliated private law colleges that enjoys consistent top ranking pan India.
Campus & Facilities
The BILS Library houses about 7000 volumes across textbook, journal and magazine sections. The college has a well-equipped Moot Court Hall to maintain a professional ambiance during practical training. The Research Lab has desktops with Manupatra installed to support student projects, moot courts and other academic work. BILS also has an anti-ragging cell to prohibit ragging activities on college premises.
