A pioneering Jewish institution devoted to Judaic and Hebraic studies, merged with Towson University in 2009.
Baltimore Hebrew University was founded in 1919 to promote Jewish scholarship and academic excellence. It was the only institution of higher learning in Maryland devoted solely to all aspects of Judaic and Hebraic studies. The university maintained strong ties to the local community and collaborated with several other colleges and universities in the region. In 2009, BHU merged with Towson University and became the Baltimore Hebrew Institute.
The university conferred degrees up to the doctorate level and was known for small, personalized classes ranging from 8 to 25 students. Its library holdings, including rare books, Yizkor books, materials on Jewish cultural reconstruction, and Holocaust survivor testimonies, were transferred to Towson University's Albert S. Cook Library following the merger.
Located in the northwest Park Heights neighborhood of Baltimore, the university occupied an urban campus. The original BHU building on Park Heights Avenue was demolished in October 2009 following the institutional merger.
