History
Assam University came into existence in 1994 after enactment of the Assam (Central) University Act 1989. The foundation stone was laid on January 21, 1994 by the then Prime Minister Shri P. V. Narsimha Rao. The university became operational from a single room in Silchar Circuit House on the same day.
Campus & Facilities
The main campus is situated at Dargakona, about 20 km away from Silchar, and is spread over 600 acres. The other campus is located at Diphu in the district of Karbi Anglong, Assam. The Malaviya Mission Teacher Training Centre at Assam University, Silchar (MMTTC-AUS) was established in 2023 under the Pandit Madan Mohan Malaviya National Mission on Teachers and Teaching (PMMMNMTT) Scheme.
Academics
Academic schools include the Rabindranath Tagore School of Languages and Cultural Studies and the Albert Einstein School of Physical Sciences, among others. The Department of Law is part of the Deshabandhu Chittaranjan School of Legal Studies. The university aims to become an institute of excellence.

The university has territorial jurisdiction over five districts of Assam: Cachar, Karimganj, Hailakandi, Dima Hasao and Karbi Anglong.
