A defunct private liberal arts college founded in 1850, destroyed during the Civil War.
Arkansas College was established in 1850 as a private liberal arts college for young men by Elder Robert Graham. In 1852, it became the first school to receive a charter from the state of Arkansas. The college was affiliated with the Christian Church and had approximately 200 students by 1854. Rev. William Baxter served as the college's second president beginning in 1859.
The college closed at the outbreak of the Civil War. On March 4, 1862, during the Confederate army's retreat from Cross Hollows, Arkansas, the college building was destroyed by Ben McCulloch's rear guard.
