Albany Medical College offers a traditional MD program with a small, intimate class of approximately 145 students selected from over 14,000 applicants. The college also provides graduate programs including Master of Science and PhD degrees in Biomedical Sciences (Neuroscience & Experimental Therapeutics, Immunology & Microbial Disease, Molecular & Cellular Physiology, Regenerative & Cancer Cell Biology), as well as specialized programs in Physician Assistant Studies, Nurse Anesthesiology, Bioethics, Clinical Investigation, and Human Anatomy. Combined-degree programs with Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, Union College, and Siena College allow up to 50 students annually to complete undergraduate and medical degrees concurrently over 7–8 years.
The college receives more NIH funding than any other program in the Capital Region. Research centers include the Alden March Bioethics Institute (with $3+ million in federal and foundation grants), the Center for Cardiovascular Sciences, Center for Cell Biology and Cancer Research, Center for Immunology and Microbial Disease, and Center for Neuropharmacology and Neuroscience. Notable discoveries by alumni include the hormone leptin, computed tomography, and oral rehydration therapy.
Students train at Albany Medical Center, a 766-bed academic medical center with the busiest Level 1 Trauma Center in New York State (75,000+ emergency visits annually). The Albany Med Health System extends training opportunities across multiple facilities including Columbia Memorial Health, Glens Falls Hospital, and Saratoga Hospital, providing exposure to diverse patient populations and specialized services.
Located in Albany's urban and suburban setting, the college maintains an intimate, collegial environment with strong emphasis on humane values and community engagement.
