Alagappa Government Arts College offers a comprehensive range of undergraduate and postgraduate programmes across Arts, Science, Commerce, and Management disciplines. The college provides 4 UG courses in Arts, 1 in Commerce, 1 in Administration, 1 in Computer Applications, and 7 in Science, alongside 7 PG courses in Science, 4 in Arts, and 1 in Commerce. M.Phil programmes are available in Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Zoology, Commerce, Tamil, History, and Management, with PhD opportunities in full-time and part-time modes across all subjects.
The college occupies 13.5 acres with a built-up area of 5,100 sq.m. The library is a central resource, housing 86,729 books including rare collections and classical first editions, with 5 computers offering internet access and e-resource subscriptions through N-List. Additional facilities include reading halls, reference rooms, and a photostat machine. The college maintains open-access library services with extended hours (8:45 am to 5:30 pm) and conducts user orientation programmes for new members.
Founded on 11 August 1947 by philanthropist Dr. RM. Alagappa Chettiar, the college initially operated as a private institution under the University of Madras. In 1985, it transitioned to government administration under Tamil Nadu. Following the establishment of Alagappa University in 2003-04, the college became affiliated with Alagappa University. The institution has been recognized by UGC with 2(f) and 12(B) status and achieved Grade 1 promotion by the Government of Tamil Nadu in 2007-08.
The college conducts undergraduate admissions through a counselling process, with rank lists and schedules published for the academic year. The institution supports student development through NCC, NSS, Fine Arts, Sports, and Women's Development Cell (WDC) activities. With a current student strength of 3,837 and a shift system introduced in 2007-08 for select courses, the college balances academic rigour with co-curricular engagement.
