All India Institute of Medical Sciences Bhubaneswar is a public institution located at Sijua, Patrapada, Bhubaneswar-751019. It was established as an autonomous institution and institute of National importance through the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (Amendment) Ordinance passed on 16th July, 2012. The institute is one of the apex healthcare institutes established by the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare, Government of India, under the Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Suraksha Yojana (PMSSY).
The foundation stone of the institute was laid by then Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee on July 15, 2003. The institute was established under Phase 1 of PMSSY in 2012 to create a centre of excellence. Its Executive Director & CEO took charge on 21st July 2022.
The institute's mission is to establish a centre of excellence in medical education, training, health care and research, imbued with scientific culture, compassion for the sick and commitment to serve the underserved. It provides undergraduate and postgraduate teaching in modern medicine and allied sciences, including physical and biological sciences. The institute also aims to attain self-sufficiency in postgraduate medical education, establish and maintain a nursing college, and train teachers for medical colleges across India.
The institute provides facilities for research in the various branches of medical and allied sciences. It achieved the 31st rank in 2021 and the 26th rank in NIRF for 2022 among all medical institutes in the country. The Executive Director's vision is to develop AIIMS Bhubaneswar as a Global Centre of Excellence in medical and allied health services.
Library facilities include a Central Library, Wi-Fi, reprography service, and a digital repository. MBBS admission is through NEET scores and MCC counselling. B.Sc. (Hons) Nursing admission is through online seat allocation, and Ph.D. admission is through a written entrance examination and interview.
