World's first osteopathic medical school, founded 1892, now a multi-campus health sciences university.
ATSU offers 30 graduate and post-professional programs across seven schools and colleges, all focused on health sciences and post-baccalaureate education. Doctoral degrees include Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine, Doctor of Dental Medicine, Doctor of Physical Therapy, Doctor of Audiology, and Doctor of Occupational Therapy. Master's programs are available in Athletic Training, Biomedical Sciences, Orthodontics, Occupational Therapy, and Physician Assistant Studies. The university also offers certificate programs in athletic sciences, global health, education, and leadership, with several programs available online. All programs hold accreditation by their respective national accrediting bodies.
ATSU operates three campuses on over 200 acres: the main Kirksville, Missouri campus (150 acres) houses the Kirksville College of Osteopathic Medicine, Museum of Osteopathic Medicine, and research facilities; the Mesa, Arizona campus (59 acres) hosts the School of Osteopathic Medicine in Arizona and School of Dentistry; and the Santa Maria, California campus (25,000 sq ft) supports the Central Coast Physician Assistant program. Students participate in 143 clubs and extracurricular organizations, including professional fraternities and student government. The 2018–19 enrollment of 3,717 students came from 35 countries, with 57% female and 43% male representation.
The AT Still Research Institute conducts research on social determinants of health, osteopathic manipulative medicine, and oral health, with funding from the National Institute for Health. ATSU provides patient care through community health centers in Missouri and Arizona, offering primary care, dental services, and specialized services including balance and hearing care. The university partners with the National Association of Community Health Centers and operates under a medical education model linking osteopathic training to community health center needs.
